A white spot is an area of enamel that appears more opaque than the surrounding tooth. It may be related to early mineral loss, post-orthodontic demineralisation, mild fluorosis, trauma or a developmental enamel difference. Similar-looking marks do not always have the same cause, so diagnosis comes before cosmetic treatment.
Icon resin infiltration is a microinvasive option for selected non-cavitated enamel lesions. After the tooth is cleaned, isolated and conditioned, a low-viscosity transparent resin is allowed to penetrate microscopic pores within the enamel and is then light-cured.
For early carious lesions, filling these diffusion pathways may help limit progression. The optical properties of the resin can also reduce the contrast between a suitable white spot and surrounding enamel, although complete masking cannot be guaranteed.
Cavitated or deeper decay, substantial enamel loss and some developmental defects may need a different approach. Suitability in children and teenagers depends on eruption, lesion depth and cause, the ability to maintain a dry field and the child's cooperation.
