Ceramic inlays, onlays and overlays are custom-made, one-piece restorations used when a tooth has lost more structure than a direct filling can predictably replace, but a full crown may not be necessary.
An inlay fits within the cusps, an onlay covers one or more weakened cusps, and an overlay protects most or all of the chewing surface. The choice depends on the remaining tooth structure, cracks, bite forces and the position of the tooth.
At Welldent, the prepared tooth and bite can be recorded with a 3Shape intraoral scanner. The restoration is digitally designed, produced from monolithic ceramic and adhesively bonded to the tooth.
Teeth that have received root canal treatment often need cuspal protection, particularly when substantial structure has been lost. However, not every root-filled tooth needs the same restoration; the final decision follows clinical and radiographic assessment.
