If brushing becomes a negotiation every evening, small choices can help. Let the child choose between two toothbrushes or decide whether to start with the top or bottom teeth.

A short song, a two-minute timer or brushing together as a family can make the routine predictable. Young children may want to brush independently, but they still need an adult to complete the cleaning.

Try letting the child go first and calling the parent's turn the 'final check'. Praise cooperation rather than demanding perfection.

If the child repeatedly avoids one area, reports pain or has bleeding, arrange a dental assessment rather than assuming it is only reluctance.
