An early dental visit is an opportunity to build familiarity before there is pain or an urgent problem. A first visit may simply involve conversation, counting teeth and showing the child a mirror.

Parents can help by using calm, neutral language. Avoid sharing frightening experiences or promising that 'nothing will happen'. Tell the child that the dentist will look at and help care for their teeth.

The dentist assesses eruption, early signs of decay, brushing and feeding habits, then gives age-appropriate advice. Treatment is not forced into the first meeting when a gradual introduction is more suitable.

Short, positive visits can help children see dental care as a normal part of growing up.
