Gum Diseases and Treatment
Periodontal (Gum) disease is characterized by gingivitis mainly caused by inadequate oral hygiene and/or genetic factors to a lesser extent. Gum diseases are unfortunately quite common in our society and affect 65% of adults. While these diseases cause lousy breath and a bad taste in the mouth in the short term for patients, if precautions are not taken, they can cause loss of teeth due to bone loss (resorbing) around the diseased gums. While treating these diseases is simple calculus and gingival cleaning in the early stages, it may require periodontal gingival surgeries to clean the inflamed tissues in the area in the future. Gum diseases can be prevented by maintaining oral hygiene (regular tooth brushing – oral care) and professional dental scaling and gum care by a dentist every 6 months. Professional scaling and gingival maintenance, which will be done by a dentist every 3-6 months, is recommended in patients with a genetic predisposition.
